Geils Band

How many genres do you have?
Hundreds, literally. From art rock to indie pop to alternative to political rap,...

Which one dominates your music collection?
I think Alternative or Indie

Do you even rate your songs?
YES, it's my goal to have them all rated, so far I'm around 80%

Is your iTunes (or whatever) nice and pretty, with everything filled in and album art displayed?
Yes. Album art, artist, album, genre, and rating. I'm still working on it though.

If so, tell me the playlists you have right now and what's in them:
I'm in my 'twisted oldies' playlist

What's your top listened to song?
Slide - Goo Goo Dolls, it's my favorite song ever. Nothing from p2p or things like that.

What artist do you have the most songs/albums from?
Not sure it's probably between The Wallflowers, John Lennon, or the Goo Goo Dolls

Search for these and see how many songs come up:
Peace: 93
Love: 413
Earth: 73
Death: 84
God: 39
Sun: 190
Moon: 48
Bird: 36
Little: 98
Big: 61

Put it on shuffle, and write the first 5 songs that come up:
Dance Tonight [Paul McCartney, Memory Almost Full]
Annie Waits [Ben Folds, Rockin' the Suburbs]
When I'm Gone [3 Doors Down, Away from the Sun]
Roll Over Beethoven [Chuck Berry, The Definitive Collection]
Angel on My Bike [The Wallflowers, Bringing Down the Horses]

What is your favourite song out of those?
Annie Waits [Ben Folds, Rockin' the Suburbs]

What is your favourite song out of those?
The Wallflowers

Do you ever go through your collection and do some 'spring cleaning'?
All the time. Songs that can't have info completed or are too long or too short that I don't hear often enough. If I don't like it, also in the Trash bin.

Do you like acoustic songs?
Of course.

Lastly, tell me how many songs you have by each artist listed:
Panic! <lj:music>I Was Watching Your Eyes-Of Montreal-Cherry Peel</lj:music>

It was such a great day. Wasn't it?

Duh.

I showed up to work praying today that Tina (my back-up) would come to work and say "Hi Annette, I'm working all eight hours today, so you can go home!"

I wake up at 4:40 AM, rush out and am at work around 4:58. I see a shorter blond get out of a truck...and it's Tina. I almost jumped for joy. Then I went in, clocked in, grabbed the keys, grabbed the closing reports. No one walks in. She then bursts in and grabs a soda as I drill her about her hours today. She says she is staying the whole day. Inside I jumped a little and waited for Johnny to show up. Now it wasn't a total waste of time, since I got to pick up my check and as soon as Johnny gave me the "don't leave me alone with Tina" look I smiled as huge as possible and rushed out.

Meaning I got to spend the whole day doing anything I wanted. I haven't done that in five weeks. I always have work or school so I was in heaven. Heaven, I say. I came home and slept till 9:30 AM and then went down to La Cumbre to deposit my check and transfer funds.

Well, since the shopping mall was RIGHT there, I couldn't resist. In my defense, I haven't the things I need in my kitchen and room. I've even been putting it off for a while, so I went to ROSS and found these adorable glasses, very snobby. I also found these adorably funky and kinda retro set of dinnerware and storage stuff along with things I really did need and was being very creative with in the past weeks with, such as a potato peeler, spatula, ladle, etc. I was overjoyed.

So now that I had kitchen tools, I went to buy real food, like potatoes to peel with my new potato slicer. AND: I finally found the crepe pan I've been looking for everywhere. So of course I made sure I had all those ingredients and such.

Not only, but shortly after I got home Portia came back, I'm assuming from a job interview, announcing excitedly that she had a job. She also told this funny story about guys, a car, and a ride. Anyways, the important thing is that she made lunch. A pretty yummy vegetable soup. Although neither one of us has had the brain to buy spices and herbs so it was missing a certain "WHAM!".

Anyways, I have just enjoyed a couple of crepes and could not be more delighted. Boring Friday night you say?! Well,...screw you.

By the way, what is up with this taxing thing. It's just not fair. My paycheck suffers way too much every week. At least 1/4 of my check I don't see. Which means 1/4 of the time I'm slaving away, It's for free. Taxing and union dues are on my hit list right now. As a democrat I'm all for taxing, but come on, when you're barely making due with what you've got and trying to help out your family that $110 taken weekly really makes a difference. Then there's the stupid union that takes another $50.

At this rate I'm never going to able to afford all that useless stuff I want. [sigh]

I'm at the point of craziness.

Seriously.

So, this week at work we're all getting trained for the new change to vericash. Seems simple enough. Oh no! It's been a week of craziness, with midterms and complications with scheduling this week. In short, I ended up getting scheduled for six days of work this week, out of seven. I, the full-time student. For some reason, my back-up bookkeeper couldn't make it in on days she is scheduled for every week, of every month,.. you get the point. I hate her right now.

Anyways, when I got home today (work schedule usually runs 5 AM - 1:30 PM, or 2 PM if I take a longer lunch) I was deadbeat tired, from midterms yesterday, no sleep last night, and just work tensions and such. I passed out while watching The Godfather II. Here's the creepy part: I had a nightmare, because dream-me panicked that she hadn't filled out the fsm paperwork right and that the lawson reports had come back way off.

In other words, I had a nightmare about work stuff. See that's when you know you work too much, and that work has become more than work. It's a part of your life. Yes, go ahead - shudder.

So I was thinking Thanksgiving. Since I haven't been there six months (or is it a year?) I don't get paid vacation, or sick days, yet. However, with this sucking up they're going for I am hoping to work four days off in a row. I mentioned it to Johnny (my twenty-two year old trainer/superior who I find really hard to take too seriously), and he's like "Sure!" I'm glad. I need to go home.

I can't cook. I cooked all summer. It was my job, even. Yet, I can't seem to make anything right. Grr. I tried making a baked apple dessert today. Entirely failed. Failed. They were not yummy. At all. The other day I tried making a pasta - a pasta! Something a ten year-old can make, and I overcooked it. My scrambled eggs came out burnt two days ago. How do you burn scrambled eggs?! I need home-cooked food. Some ceviche would be nice, flan would be better, or better yet some of those empanadas. Oh, yes. Arroz con leche. Chicken Soup. Real food. Even a torta, or a quesadilla. Everything just tastes so much better coming from my mum. Until then, I need to get out of this funk. Or I'll starve.

And apparently I've been saying mum (for mom) lately. It's annoying when I don't know when I pick up things from people and when I started it. I'm 99% sure I got it from Eleanor. Those bloody English.

PS: The Godfather - amazing. I finally got around to Netflix-ing The Godfather II and I've had it for three days without really getting to watching it. Every time I start it I fall asleep. It's not so much that it's boring (not at all!) I'm just so tired, etc. It's really bugging me. I need to watch that movie, so I can take in it's awesome-ness. I will say this, these movies make me want to be in a mob so bad, you know get into something fishy and be able to cause someone's murder. Is it just me?

PSS: I'm not abandoning LJ, I'm just trying out that blogspot thing. I am NOT A TRADER!

Me counting, depositing, accounting, working with money. Having my own office, email, #, and a double digit hourly salary.

Ha. Ha. Ha

PS: This semesters classes are SO FUN. I'm not even kidding, I am in love with all my professors, except my photography prof, but that's just because he's kinda weird, but in a good way. Ethics, History, Politics, Macroecon, Photography. My favorite is my Poli Sci class, it is filled with such a diverse group of people that discussions get really interesting every time.

I get my paycheck tomorrow. Yes. Sadly, I have to start paying my union dues by Oct. 11, which sucks. There goes 50 bucks out of every check. That's two weeks of gas!

Ha ha!

what will they play at your wedding;
"Best of You" (Foo Fighters) Wow, that's negative

what is your hobby or interest;
"Tangled" (Maroon 5) I don't get this one at all

what is your biggest fear;
"We're Going to be Friends" (The White Stripes) Yeah, real scary

what is your biggest secret;
"Map of the Problematique" (Muse) These don't make sense anymore, it was a good roll though

what do you think of your friends;
"Man of Constant Sorrow" (Bob Dylan) ...(bobs along, no pun intended)

what song will you repost this as;
"Strong Tower" (Kutless) Let's leave on a positive note then!

    <lj:music>Disjoint Allocation-The Society Islands-Kiss & Tell</lj:music>

I am so giddy. I have a friend who is interning at The Progressive and he promised me he'd get me a subscription.

The huge magazine/newspaper junkie I am - I was excited to get my first issue in the mail today. FYI The Progressive is a monthly political magazine that is heavily biased to the left of the American political spectrum. So yes it is filled with Bush bashing and anti-corporate sentiment. It has tons of stories about people chaining themselves to objects/people to make activist statements protecting someone or something's political rights. The joy, the enthusiasm. My heavily right winged and Republican friends will enjoy my constant references to this at times weird publication.

I first saw it about a year and a half ago and was greatly impressed by the "No Comment" section. It's a special page where readers can send stories (verified, of course) from other publications and trusted sources that just leaves you with an overwhelming "...?!"

I'll share some from the August '07 issue:

McDictionary: McDonald's is lobbying dictionary publishers to change the meaning of the word "McJob," reports Time.com. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a McJob as "an unstimulating, low-paid job with few prosects, especially one created by the expansion of the service sector." McDonald's says the word denigrates its employees, and wants McJob to "reflect a job that is stimulating, rewarding... and offers skills that last a lifetime."

Loans to Lonely Hearts: A bank in South Korea is offering special interest rates to Korean soldiers jilted by their girlfriends, reports The New York Times. Soldiers need to show letters or e-mails to bank clerks proving their breakup. Military service is mandatory for young men in the country.

(can you imagine walking in to ask about this promotion? "Uh hey I heard you had great rates for...")

And my favorite from this issue:

The Bomb That Dares Not Speak Its Name: The U.S. military once considered developing a "love bomb" as part of its non-lethal arsenal, reports the BBC. The bomb would release an aphrodisiac chemical that would provoke widespread homosexual behavior among troops, causing what the military called a distatesful but completely nonlethal" blow to morale.

BTW: I just got a hold of The Society Islands new song, it's sweet. Very sub-pop indie.

    <lj:music>Sex Changes-The Dresden Dolls-Yes, Virginia</lj:music>

149B61

How well do you know your favorite band/artist?

1. What is your favorite Band/Artist?
The Wallflowers is my all-time favorite, but as of now I'm currently really into the Dresden Dolls. So I'll do both.

2. What kind of music do they perform?
The Wallflowers - Alternative with an almost hawaiian sound, it's very mellow, quite Jack Johnson-y.
The Dresden Dolls - Punk Cabaret. It's very dark and witty and catchy at the same time.

3. Name your favorite song(s)
The Wallflowers - Three Marlenas, Sidewalk Annie, Josephine, Shy of the Moon, Sugarfoot
The Dresden Dolls - My Alcoholic Friends, Sex Changes, First Orgasm, Missed Me, Girl Anacrhonism

4. Least Favorite?
The Wallflowers - Days of Wonder, Everything I Need, they just never stuck, still good songs though.
The Dresden Dolls - "Mrs. O", it seems to be missing something and "Me & The Minibar", I've only heard it once so far and it doesn't follow the flow of the others

5. Have you seen them live? If so how many times?
The Wallflowers - I saw J. Dylan perform solo at the House of Blues but minus the rest of the band. Close?
The Dresden Dolls - I don't think they've performed in the US or if they have I haven't heard them here.

6. Does your band/artist write their own music?
The Wallflowers - Jakob Dylan (Bob Dylan's son yo!) writes the bands songs and he writes songs for tons of other artists, great hits. Funny how they can't get mainstream big with such an amazing songwriter.
The Dresden Dolls - Amanda Palmer (the lead singer, amazing vocals) I think writes all the songs. I could be wrong, she may just co- some some

7. What is their most recent single/video?
The Wallflowers - "Beautiful Side of Somewhere" from Rebel, Sweetheart I think. That was in '05 though.
The Dresden Dolls - I think Backstabber or Sing came out last year when Yes, Virginia came out.

8. Would their music be played at the local club?
No, it's not club music.

9. Has their music made it to a movie soundtrack?
The Wallflowers - they've been on almost every big soundtrack, my favorite is the I Am Sam soundtrack, They've done American Wedding and Zoolander...and...
The Dresden Dolls - Not to my knowledge, they're pretty new though.

10. Why are you a fan? And how long have you been a fan?
The Wallflowers - 2003 when I first saw I Am Sam, the soundtrack blew me away and I had to hear more. Their interpretation of classics hooked me.
The Dresden Dolls - Since just this February, Eleanor is from the UK so she introduces me to tons of amazing music, this just stood out. But I'm still raiding her music collection. Germany especially has some great music.

11. Whats the biggest misconception that non fans have of your band?
The Wallflowers - that they are not original. Tons of people think Jakob is just trying to suck up to his pop's fame and name but he has really done everything to not sell out and bring his fresh perspective into the music business. Some real music in all the trash.
The Dresden Dolls - I don't know any. Probably that it's raunchy based off song titles, but it's just fun music.

12. Do they ever do anything other than music? (movies, television, etc)
No, no, no.

13. What is currently going on with them and their music?
The Wallflowers - Rebel, Sweetheart didn't do too great so I don't know how the comeback album is going, if at all. Jakob is really busy writing hits for everyone else though, sad.
The Dresden Dolls, touring and working on a new album. Yay.

15. Have you ever had the chance to meet them? If so what were they like? Did your opinions of them change at all?
No to both. Sad

16. Do you collect memorabilia and merchandise? If so explain your collection.
I just have the CDs, although I have got my hand on early demo recordings of the Wallflowers stuff.

17. What are your most prized possessions?
...?

18. Do you visit their official site on a daily basis?
No, once every two months maybe.

19. How much money do you guess you have spent on them and their music?
The Wallflowers - I bought all their CDs on amazon for a total of less thank 60 bucks, that's including soundtracks they've been on. Sweet.
The Dresden Dolls - I think they only have two major CDs out and that's all I've got, I bought both for $10 each.

20. Why would you recommend their music to your friends?
The Wallflowers - the brilliant lyrics, the voice and the unique sound that just relaxes you while filling you with energy.
The Dresden Dolls - they're funky and have a new edge that music really needs. It's fun and gets me happy without being all teenie-bopper-y. It's definitely unique.

    <lj:music>Was It You?-Spoon-Gimme Fiction</lj:music>

1. What is more difficult for you, looking into someone’s eyes when you are telling someone how you feel, or looking into their eyes when they are telling you how they feel?
Looking at someone in the eye when I'm telling them how I feel.

2. Think of the last time you were angry. Why were you angry?
I was functioning off 3 hours of sleep in a matter of two days and working overtime. They switched my day off and I broke. Ha.

3. You will die in three minutes. Last call.
My mom/sister.

4. You have three months to live:
(a) Do you tell anyone/everyone you are going to die?
No, maybe the last month, or maybe not.

(b) What do you do with your remaining days?
Work less, go out more and go to church. Ha.

(c) Would you be afraid?
Yes, you never do enough in this world. How do you know you were good enough? You don't.

5. You can have one of the following two things: trust/love.
Trust brings love, dork. And vica versa.

6. You are walking down the street on your way to work. There is a dog drowning in the canal on the side of the street. Your boss has told you if you are late one more time you get fired. Do you save the dog?
Save the dog. Jobs come and go, and if I'm late all the time then I guess I wasn't too stoked about the job anyways. Ha ha ha.

7. You are unfaithful to your spouse/significant other. Do you tell him/her?
I loathe cheaters. If I were so low as to do so, then it means I shouldn't even be in a relationship anyways.

8. Think of the last person who you know that died. You have the chance to give them 1 hour of life back, but you have to give one year of your life...Do you do it?
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.

9. Are you the kind of friend that you would want to have as a friend?
Yes =).

10. Does sex = love?
No, sex is on the side of lust. That and the fact hookers exist.

11. Your boss tells your co-worker that they have to let them go because of work shortage, and they are the newest employee. You have been there much longer. Your co-worker has a family to support and no other means of income. Do you go to your boss and offer to leave the company?
Wow, ethically I wouldn't be doing anything wrong by keeping the job but I would feel bad. I'd keep it if I loved it but offer my support to the person.

12. When and how was the last time you told someone how you feel?
Um, Jo.

13. What would be harder for you, to tell someone you love them or that you do not love them back?
Telling them I do. It's so much easier to be selfish, ain't it?

14. What do you think would be the hardest things for you to give up?
My addictions. I'm addicted to everything. [I agree entirely]

15. Romantic love; when was the last time you told someone you loved them? and meant it?
I told one person. I didn't mean it, in retrospect.

16. If you had to go back in time and change one thing, if you HAD to, even if you have "no regrets" what would you change?
Ha, honestly? That one time I went cannoeing, ouch. Not a biggie, but still.

17. Imagine. It is a dark night, you are alone, it is raining outside, and you hear someone walking around outside your window. What do you do?
Turn on the TV real loud. It will a) drown out the noise and leave me oblivious to what's happening. b) hopefully scare the person away and c) entertain me

18. Would you give a homeless person CPR if they were dying?
Yes. A person dying and not help them?

19. You are holding onto your grandmother's dying hand and the hand of a newborn that you do not know as they hang over the edge of a cliff. You have to let one go to save the other which one would it be?
My grandma would agree and want me to save the baby.

20. Are you old fashioned?
In many ways.

21. If you could do anything OR wish anything, what would it be?
I wish I could write in cursive. My cursive skills are pretty cruddy.
Have you ever taken a picture of your eye?
Yeah

Do you actually have a favorite flower?
Yep, daisies

Can you change a printer cardridge?
Of course.

Do you have sensitive skin?
Yeah, eczema mostly.

Do you recognize Justin Timberlake's songs?
Yeah, he's the one with the girly voice and generic beats.

When did you last have a cookie?
For breakfast!

Are you lactose intolerant?
Nope, thankfully. I heart dairy.

Are you a sarcastic person?
Never,.....

Who were you in - no not high school - even worse... middle school?
The smart one you could convince to let you copy.

Do you judge a person by how they dress?
On a certain scale. Not as a person but as to their tastes.

Do you have a credit card?
Yeah.

Do you personally know anyone who has gone bankrupt?
No, yet. We're still young, give it a while.

Do you honestly watch very much TV?
Yes I do, in my free time.

How many emails do you have?
I get about 40 a day. It's not a lot thank gosh.

Are YOU smarter than a fifth grader?
I watch the show and have so far proven to be!

Would you ever go on that show?
No, in person I'd probably forget very obvious things and have to publicly say I was not smarter than a 10 year old.

If you couldn't swim, how would you save a drowning friend?
Get someone else or throw stuff.

Now you can swim. Your worst enemy is drowning. What do you do?
Save them. Person is a person no matter how annoying.

Are you comfortable with your looks?
No but you're stuck with what you've got.

Have you ever had sleep problems like insomnia?
Yeap.

Have you ever been ripped off?
Yeah. The vending machine at work has taken my money three times. Never again!

Do you actually believe that Alaska is covered in snow?
It's not?

Ever been there? Or ever want to go there?
No, but I hear you get paid to live there.

How many different instant messengers do you have?
AIM and Yahoo!

Do you have an obsessive personality?
With certain things. [uhum]

Did/do you hate PE in school?
I liked PE, I liked to run.

Would you ever take steroids?
Nah, it makes you manly.

Have you ever been in a movie theater when it is light?
Yeah

Do you ever wish you were the opposite sex?
When it seems easier to be a guy, yeah.

Do you take pictures of yourself for your Myspace (or other site)?
Not specifically

Are you very good at running on rocks?
Yes! I should compete.

Have you ever actually seen the ocean?
Duh.

Do you like minty or hot gum?
Minty.

Do you like having a "cute" or a "hot" girlfriend/boyfriend better?
Cute. I like cute better.

Do you wear jewelry often?
No, I hate jewelry.

When did you stop believing the opposite sex was "icky" or "had cooties"?
Probably around 7th grade, although I still half believe it.

What color is your keyboard?
white, it's attached to the screen.

And your mouse?
Laptop, it's no mouse.

Speaking of mice, have you ever seen one?
Yeah, psychology class. [Ew].

Ever been to Hollywood?
Yeah, at least eight times.

Have you ever experienced a hurricane?
No, I'm lucky

If you moved to Florida and a hurricane hit, would you ever go back?
No! <lj:music>Power to the People - John Lennon</lj:music>

this saturday-sunday was amazing in the biggest sense. i have never been a part of a protest/demonstration this big - with i think over 6,000 people in L.A, a total of 15 cities over the continental U.S. - totaling over 100,000 showed up all over.

Invisible Children - Displace Me (Info, What is it?)

our invisible children ministry here at westmont has been working hard to spread awareness, fundraise, and do all we can for the people of northern uganda. seven of us from westmont, along with friends from the santa barbara area (total of 12) went to pomona, california to the fairgrounds.

we had with us:
boxes of saltine crackers
1 L bottles of water (1 for each)
Sleeping Bags (1 for each)
Tons of cardboard
Art Supplies
Cameras
Our photo that is being mailed with our letters

at check in we were taking pictures of (to go on the website) and directed to a sign up table where we signed our names and tagged our bracelets. we checked in our crackers and water till rationing time which would come many hours later. we proceeded along a dark cool corridor in the hot weather (at least 85) and followed to a field with at least already two thousand people. we found the rest of our westmont friends and set up camp.

the cardboard was useful for building our homes for the night, where we would sleep and live - tighly packed in a community. we filmed for the displace me video and heard speakers, wrote our letters to the governor, senators, the president, the president of uganda. we all called five friends who did not know about invisible children and talked to them on the spot at the same time as 100,000 other people. we all took down the white house's number and were directed to call monday morning.

we see documentaries and testamonies of people living in the camps and we saw what invisible children had done so far. people had come to the los angeles camp from las vegas, brazil, japan, india, canada. it was madness. the hope and life that filled that camp was amazing. everyone there truly wanted to help these children, but especially end the war. we were quenched with thirst and received our food and water around 9 PM (having arrived at 3PM on a very hot, dry day) and the weather was quickly cooling down, mist falling along.

it really was an experience

Click for More

I just got out of Christian Doctrine, which made me sad cause it is my favorite class, and we didn't even finish the lecture. [sigh]. We left off on the presense of Christ and the different views and such,

but school is officially over, I only have three finals one on Monday and one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday. French then Doctrine then History, with art only having to turn in a final project by May 4th, no actual test. It's pretty sweet.

I'm off to catch my measily check of only $64.80, I barely worked the past two weeks so it's sad. This will only pay for this weekends minimal extravaganzas. Aka: a Blenders (or if I'm cheap, Jamba Juice) smoothie and maybe Chipotle (yuck) or Rudy's. I'm not a fan of this being poor thing.

I need to start packing, but for now I need to go catch my check!

For the record

This semester I took:
Principles of Art with Scott Anderson 8:00 - 10:00 AM Tues/Thurs
Christian Doctrine with Telford Work 1:15 - 3:05 PM Tues/Thurs
Perspectives on World History with Mullen	9:15 - 10:20 AM Mon/Wed/Fri
French II with Madame Collier 11:35 - 12:30 PM Mon/Wed/Fri
General Research (Online) Eureka (online class)

My favorite class was Christian Doctrine with Work. He is an amazing professor in any way a professor can be amazing. He is witty and intelligent and wears bow ties. He is a great lecturer and we all have a ton of respect for him. He makes us ask questions and constantly engage in discussions. The readings for the class are amazing and really focus on all aspects of Doctrine, even the athiest view on Christianity which he admits is one of his favorites. He never looks down on any other religious view or opinion no matter how stupid it was (like some questions in class are really just....simple).

Principles of art was a really good class where I got to learn the basics of art such as form and structure, working a lot on texture, value, colour, line, and shape. We did so many painting projects that it's ridiculous. The lab fee was pretty high to pay for all the art supplies but I guess it's worth it as it's gotten me into painting, more specifically with the quill looking pen, which is my favorite. We worked on collages and drafting and painting and we visited the Getty Museum, tons of lectures on different art movements and artists. We had a famous painter come in to give a lecturer which was pretty sweet and I've gotten really good at drawing.

Perspectives on world history is the most horrid class ever. Maybe it's Mullen, a nice woman who just strays so much, or maybe the class. It's a requirement on the GEs and required, no option classes. The title implies its about history, and our books are historical articles and a book on history from 1400-2006....yet most of the time we talk about a Christian perspective on world history. Okay, fair enough. However, so far in this class all we have talked about is family, marriage, women and men roles in society, and have at most spent a total of 3 hours of the whole semester actually talking history. "Draw what your ideal family looks like" It was a ridiculous class I am not unhappy to leave.

French was okay, nothing special. It was a class of 12 students of which half were engaged. I'm not even kidding. The two cute guys in the class were single though so it made me feel better, I was the only first-year in the class which made it a bit awkward but I survived. She always brought her dog to class and we had a lot of songs to sing in French in the beginning of every class. We did a bunch of exercises and presentations. Didn't mind having a test every week, and I really did enjoy having it right after chap so that I was done early in the day.

I worked at the housing office for a while which was fun, and had a lot of drama in my section of the dorms which was interesting. I got a lot closer to some of the girls and noticed huge and unsurmountable differences in others. I really get how people say you meet your life friends in college, it really does feel that way.

I'm hungry

you'd think after months, i'd forget about my own little space of cyberweb.

i haven't. i just have been having the weirdest semester of my life. which is as great as it is not. the good thing is that you grow out of every experience. that said,...

i don't personally like the image and role of women in western culture, more specifically in european/caucasian culture, although i don't know the politically correct term for "it".

Living in an entirely different culture for almost a year has shown me ways to appreciate my culture so much more. Because I am not a part of that culture, I don't even try to blend into it, it is boring - in plain English. Maybe it's part of the fascination of women with power here in the U.S., but gosh I am frustrated with image.

Although I do admit, before I start my rant, that I do have a rather filtered view of U.S. caucasian culture since I am at a Christian, upper-class school. Yet....

Women differ between cultures, that much is obvious. I just didn't realize how much the differences frustrated me, specifically when it comes to expectations. At least here at Westmont and what I can gather from a lot of my friends' outside lives from here, women are expected to play a passive role, where inner strength and passion are surprising. There are so many women here that are trying so hard (I'll admit I'm starting to find myself in a trap at times) to be in a way weak. Just the image that is desired is ridiculously symbolic. Light hair, preferably blond or light brown, light eyes that softly gaze, soft curls or smooth straight hair that is subtly highlighted but always long with long layers. Small nose and lips, and let's not forget a small figure, preferably that which resembles a thirteen year old. It actually is the image portrayed in many popular magazines - sick. Literally you have to look like you're starving to be considered beautiful.

That said, if this is what women are expected to look like at Westmont College (many parts of Washington, Orange County, Colorado, and the other places people tell me this is normal) how are they expected to act? Their demeanor should be soft and nurturing, gentle and soothing. Women are supposed to be conservative and put a 'but' to everything. Adventurous and lively, vivid people are strange. Some of the best people I've met here are people that just don't fit the mold - they are loud, self-opinionated, lively, passionate, smart, questioning, strong, respectful, and outwardly extroverted. Why should they be pressured to mold into something less. Why do they need to 'gentle' their spirits. As Christians aren't we supposed to be full of passion and fire, strong and willing to stand up for things we believe? As a Christian college why does it encourage otherwise?

Ever since I started coming here I've been subconciously trying to be as opposite of this mold as possible because I was afraid I would try to fit into it. I dye my hair the darkest colours possible and wear bright colours, I go to parties with my friends because I know it makes a lot of people uncomfortable to know that students from such a STUCK UP institution are mingling and dancing and loosening up. You don't have to be wound up to respect yourself. There are so many people here that think you have to hold yourself back to be a good person, but that shouldn't mean you have to hold back your personality.

Okay, as always my ramble makes no sense. That's the point. I just want to get out what is on my mind.

so yes,

this weekend was tons of fun - friday was the christmas parade downtown, saturday was pre-formal fun and winter formal, as well as sunday madness when we all just hung out and had fun =D

so the christmas parade took forever, and we couldn't leave till santa appeared....from 6:30 to 8:30, yes we waited two hours on a street with tons of people to see santa for 30 seconds. and it was worth it - he looks like our campus pastor Ben Patterson. So now we know everything - Ben Patterson is Santa, that's why he's so nice and happy. Maybe that's where the anonymous 75 million dollar donation came from...Santa donated it.

so saturday we had agreed that kristen, julie, rocki, lisa, (maybe) christiana, and me would go downtown around 12:30 to go shop for things we still needed for formal and things we just needed or wanted plus see if we could get our make up done for us at a counter.

however, lisa's soccer game (she is in charge of the women's soccer club) ended very early and she had a westmont suburban in her hands till around 2 PM, so at 11 AM we woke up julie and carrie and lisa, and me and rocki dashed out the door to vons to buy food and headed to carpinteria (about 6-7 miles out south) to a burger joint rocki called the spot that was conveniently located right on the carpenteria beach.

julie and i ordered the "hicken burgers" and milkshakes and we all headed down to finish our food on the beach, we frolicked and drew and jumped about and all around, and then we all look back and a pack of about 20 seagulls and other birds are pecking at our stuff/FOOD! the funniest thing ...almost a scene from "The Birds"

we then headed down to state and got some coffee at the roasting company and to nordstrom to the mac counter, by this point lisa and carrie had to head back a) to return the car and b) to get ready for her date

so julie, rocki, and moi sat there waiting and when the chicks were done we looked so made-up that we felt weird just walking back to the shittle stop. we got back around 4 PM ish and started getting ready - like washing the beach sand off our legs and stuff like that - after getting ready our cheap selfs (including half of section 3b) headed to the dc for free diner

the formal was at camarillo ranch which was this super fancy place with a big mansion open for us to take pictures in and a formal tent outside on the back lawn where the dance was officially taking place. they had ice scultures and waiters and a chocolate fountain, huge dancefloor, strobbing lights - very well planned. super fun and very worth it

then now i'm sitting in my psyc class and ready to take notes, fun fun

finals are next week, and i'm not too happy about that
